How to get to Isla Mujeres?
If all roads lead to Rome, shouldn’t the same be true for Isla Mujeres where you can discover one of the Top 10 beaches in the world and the most unforgettable sunsets and sunrises? However surprising it may be, not all roads take you to Isla Mujeres but from Cancun there are certainly many options and from other areas in the Riviera Maya you just have to get to Cancun.
The number one option to get to the island is the ferry that leaves from Puerto Juarez. If you are staying in the city, that is the easiest and quickest way. From there it takes a mere 18 minutes to get to this crowd favorite, leaving every half hour all day long until midnight. If you want to cross with your car, the option is the ferry leaving from Punta Sam with varying crossing times. It is highly recommended to contact Marítima Isla Mujeres, the Punta Sam ferry service, for exact times on your planned crossing day.
If you are staying in the hotel zone in Cancun you have three options as there are ferry services leaving from Playa Tortugas, Playa Caracol or El Embarcadero, easy to find but with more limited scheduled crossing times.
Another option is to arrive on a tour or a catamaran or boat chartered for the day, which will very surely anchor in Playa Norte so you can enjoy the beach, the ambience, the food and everything this beautiful side of the island has to offer, especially due to its crystal clear and shallow waters, very few waves, a place where everybody will surely find something to love.
Isla Mujeres is free of sargasso (algae) all year long, so, mainly during the summer, we recommend not to stray very far from the island, stay a few days to truly enjoy the beautiful sunrises, the first rays of the sun in all of Mexico looking out from a cliff at the temple of the Mayan goddess Ixchel, to get to know Punta Sur and Playa Norte, and everything in between. The island is only 8 kilometers long so it is easy to visit, to get to know it and to fall in love with it.
Isla Mujeres has no weak spots, thus crossing by ferry for the day or deciding to stay will always have the same outcome… you will want to return. Not all roads may take you to Isla Mujeres but you will always find the way to come back.
